Supporting Farmers and Ranchers
The first listening session in the Midwest focusing on the 2023 Farm Bill was held in Rice County Minnesota. Over 130 people attended. Areas of focus were on: animal health, crop insurance, conservation, dairy, nutrition, and energy.
Union members also offered testimonials. Gail Donkers talked about mental health and farming, which is often overlooked, and supporting the next generation of farmers. Kelsey Love who attended the event offered this reflection regarding farming, “… The playbook is changing, and we need policies that recognize the diverse models of how food is produced. We need policies that support farm viability for young farmers and farmers of color, and we need them yesterday.”
As your next House Representative, and Minnesota Farmers Union Member, I will work to support our farmers and ranchers. I will work with you–and for you–as your advocate to improve the 2023 Farm Bill.
Information and quotes were directly taken from The Minnesota Agriculture: A Publication of Minnesota Farmers Union, from the September 2022 edition.
Voting is our right, or obligation, and our American superpower.
I was invited by Mikki Morrissette, the publisher and editor for the Minnesota Women’s Press to offer reflections on what it was like to run for MN House in Greater Minnesota. The question I was asked to write on was: “Is Greater Minnesota hopelessly red?”
Here is my response.
