In the Winter Moonlight

Winter has arrived.

The nights
navy blue sky
is lit by the full moon.

Clouds quickly
move across the prairie
gathering

separating

the shapes morphing
like time lapsed photography:
a seahorse
a carriage
a crown.

The winds announce
the season’s change
with their cold Arctic chill.
They blow
relentlessly
across the open land.

My trees are silhouetted
in the moonlight.
Their limbs quake in the cold
the shadows long
across the yard.

My two cats
once feral
born in that open space
of prairie
and wild grasses
run back and forth
in front of the window.

Tails twitching.

They recognize
that other life.
A life
that might have been.

Clouds quickly
move across the prairie
gathering

separating

the shapes morphing
like time lapse photography:
a mouse
a tree
a ball of twine.
